Remeron (Mirtazapine) is a medication primarily used in the mental health field. It belongs to a unique class of antidepressants known as tetracyclic antidepressants (TeCAs).
Remeron is primarily FDA-approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). Because of its specific side-effect profile, doctors often prescribe it off-label for: insomnia (due to its sedative properties), anxiety disorders, loss of appetite or underweight conditions.
The active ingredient is Mirtazapine. Unlike many antidepressants that simply block the reuptake of chemicals, Remeron works as an alpha-2 antagonist. It essentially cuts the brakes on the brain’s release of norepinephrine and serotonin. It also strongly blocks specific histamine (H1) receptors, which is why it causes significant sleepiness.
HOW TO TAKE
It is almost always taken once daily at bedtime because of its drowsy effect.
It can be taken with or without food.
Like most antidepressants, it may take 1 to 4 weeks before you feel the full therapeutic benefits.
Never stop taking Remeron cold turkey, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms.
Always work with your doctor to taper the dose.
MISSED DOSE
If you have missed a dose, take it as soon as you have remembered unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double up.
SIDE EFFECTS
While everyone reacts differently, the most common experiences include: somnolence (significant daytime sleepiness or grogginess); increased appetite (many users experience the munchies, leading to weight gain); dry mouth (dehydration and a cotton-mouth sensation); dizziness (especially when standing up too quickly).
WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS
Like all antidepressants, it carries a warning regarding increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours in children, adolescents, and young adults.
Do not drink alcohol while taking Remeron; it will dangerously multiply the sedative effects.
Though rare, combining this with other serotonergic drugs (like SSRIs or MAOIs) can cause a life-threatening reaction.
In very rare cases, it can cause a serious drop in white blood cell count.
Contact a doctor if you develop a sudden fever or sore throat.
