Ketorolac (Ketorol DT) is primarily used for the short-term management (up to 5 days) of moderate to severe acute pain. It is most commonly prescribed for post-operative pain (after surgery), dental pain (severe toothaches or post-extraction), acute musculoskeletal pain (severe sprains or injuries), renal colic (pain from kidney stones). It is not intended for minor aches or chronic conditions like long-term arthritis.
Ketorolac (Ketorol DT = dispersible tablet) 10 mg contains Ketorolac Tromethamine, a potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is unique because of its high potency, often compared to mild opioids, but it must be used with significant caution and for a very short duration.
HOW IT WORKS
Ketorolac works by inhibiting enzymes called cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2). These enzymes are responsible for producing prostaglandins, which are chemicals in the body that signal pain, cause inflammation, and trigger fever. By blocking these chemicals, the medication reduces the sensation of pain and swelling at the source.
HOW TO TAKE
Because this is a dispersible tablet (DT), it is designed to act quickly. Place the tablet in a small amount of water (about a teaspoon or a small glass), let it dissolve completely, stir, and drink immediately. Alternatively, some brands allow it to be dissolved directly in the mouth, followed by a sip of water. Usually taken every 4 to 6 hours as needed, or as directed by your doctor. It is highly recommended to take it with food, milk, or an antacid to protect your stomach lining. Do not exceed 40 mg (4 tablets) in a 24-hour period. Never take it for more than 5 days.
MISSED DOSE
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but skip it if it’s almost time for the next one. Do not double the dose.
SIDE EFFECTS
Common side effects are usually related to the digestive system: nausea, stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea, or gas. Among the neurological ones are dizziness, drowsiness, or headache. Other: sweating or swelling (edema). Serious Side Effects: black, tarry stools or vomiting blood (signs of stomach bleeding). Shortness of breath or sudden chest pain. Severe skin rashes or blisters. Yellowing of the eyes/skin (liver issues) or decreased urination (kidney issues).
WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS
Stomach Health: high risk of stomach ulcers or bleeding, especially in the elderly or those with a history of ulcers.
Kidney/Liver: use with extreme caution if you have pre-existing kidney or liver disease.
Heart Health: may increase the risk of heart attack or stroke; not for use before or after heart bypass surgery.
Alcohol: strictly avoid alcohol, as it significantly increases the risk of stomach bleeding.
Pregnancy/Nursing: generally not recommended, especially in the third trimester, as it can affect fetal circulation and labor.
Drug Interactions: inform your doctor if you take blood thinners (Warfarin), Lithium, Methotrexate, or other NSAIDs (like Aspirin or Ibuprofen).
